Earlier I blogged about Veri-husband and I deciding to live our lives using just one car. It hasn’t always been easy, Veri-husband has added nearly and hour to his work day picking me up and dropping me off, sometimes he gets tied up and I am stranded at work, waiting long after everyone has left, but all in all I am happy with our decision. It’s inconvenient, but I’m propped up by savings in money and environmental impact.

About three years ago, Veri-husband and I started looking into buying a diesel to convert to run on veggie oil. We helped our friends convert two of their cars, and weighed many options. First we were going to buy an older car as a trial, but soon realized we couldn’t live on one, old model car. We looked at VW and Mercedes sedans and wagons, but neither matched both our need for a place for our dogs to travel and help getting out of our driveway and dirt road on snowy days.

Finally, after years of talk and research, we realized we had to just do it if we were going to do it. So today we bought a Jeep Liberty diesel to combat the snow, transport our dogs, and save the environment.

Okay, maybe we’re not saving environment single-handedly, but we will be running it primarily on veggie oil from our local Mexican restaurant. It’s not an easy operation, running a car on veggie oil isn’t for everyone, but there is something very delicious about getting one over on the nasty oil companies, and being able own a car where you can literally suck on the tailpipe with no repercussions.

We hope, too, to soon use this chemistry to heat our home, all for less money and more importantly, less impact on the environment. This we are still researching, so if anyone has any information on using veggie oil as home heating oil, we are taking in any input you may have.
